The Surfing Equipment You Need

Surfing equipment is fairly basic and not very expensive to buy. If you are a first time surfer, you should borrow a board and get a feel of it before purchasing your own. Do some research on trusted surfing equipment providers and vendors and don’t compromise on the quality of the equipment.

If you’re learning to surf, then use this as a check list while you’re out shopping.

The Surfboard

You can’t surf without it! Surfboards have undergone major transformation. Initially they were made of wood and were very big and heavy. But today boards are made of foam, fibreglass and even polyester resin. Newer surfboard designs use materials such as carbon fibre and variable-flex composites. The main parts of a board are the deck, rail, nose, tail and stringer.

The deck is the flat side of the board where the surfer stands. The nose is the part of the board that sits out of the water, it usually pointed and round. The tail is the at the back of the board that has many different shapes. It holds the leash that the surfer attaches to his ankle so the board doesn’t get lost. The rails are the “edge” of the surfboard. They run from the tail to the nose and also along the place where the deck and the bottom meet. Rail shapes vary from board to board that provide different surfboard performances.

There are different types of boards; some are long and some are short. There are four basic designs, the first is the longboard, or the Malibu, the second is the shortboard, known as the thruster, the third is the fish, which is similar to the shortboard and the fourth is the gun. The best board for a beginner is the Malibu.

Wet suits

The next item on the list is the wetsuit. Some people wear trunks or shorts to surf, while others prefer the wetsuit. The wetsuit is great in colder climates, like in Europe or Australia, and keep you warm. Make sure you choose a wetsuit that has a sealed seam, which will hold a thin layer of water that works as insulation for the body.

Leash

A leash is a cable that has one end fixed to the tail of the board and the other end attached to the ankle. The leash ensures the board doesn't get too far away from the surfer. The leash should be about the same length as your board.

Surfboard Wax

The wax is applied to the surface of the board to enhance the grip of the surfer in any condition. It is also applied to the sides of the board, i.e. on the rails.

You have the equipment and now it’s time to learn how to surf. Soul Surfing in Australia provides surf lessons and also organises surfing camps and yoga retreats. Visit their website for any additional information: www.soulsurfing.com.au

Things To Keep In Mind While Surfing

There are rules in every sport, along with a code of ethics. They are guidelines and bring a sense of order to a game. If you want to play a game, follow the rules and always respect them. Surfing is an adventure sport where you compete with yourself. You have to be at the top of your game to catch and ride the big waves and, at the same time, look after yourself.

The Surfing Equipment You Need

When you’re dealing with the sea and something as extreme as surfing, you need to be careful. Your equipment is what takes care of you while you’re off riding the waves. If you’re a beginner, buying the equipment is like an induction into the sport! You don’t require a lot to start surfing; it’s all about you, your board and the waves.

What Equipment Do You need for a Triathlon? A Beginner Triathlete's Guide

When you are new to Triathlon there can be a lot of different people giving you a lot of different opinions about what gear/equipment you need to get. From my experience, some of these opinons can be a little deceiving. Sometimes the suggestions you hear from others are not necessary for you to get started. I am here to tell you exactly what you must have.

A Roadworthy Bike. Make sure your bike is up to the national standards. Remember that those safety standards are there for a reason…to save you life or prevent injury. I have seen many injuries that could have been prevented if they had have had their bike well maintained etc.  I advise not to go out there and get the best and most expensive bike although it may be tempting. Unless you do a lot of riding you will not know the difference between the different bikes (i.e. the gearing, different frames etc)
You will need a Helmet. Make sure that the helmet also meets the national standards. This is the only thing between you and the road. The last thing you want to worry about is whether or not you helmet will brace a fall, so take the time to get this checked out.

Comfy Bathers. Although it is not necessary to get a wetsuit, it can help. Not only will it keep you more buoyant, but this will give you confidence if you are not a strong swimmer. However, do not go out and buy the latest and greatest wetsuit. There are a couple of reasons for this. Firstly, you will not know the difference or be able to feel the difference between the wetsuits. Secondly, it is better to do your research before lashing out and buying one…they're quite expensive. Having said this, it is not essential to get a wetsuit. It is really personal preference.

Goggles: These you will need. If you are having trouble because they are fogging up, rub some saliva on the inside of the lens and this should do the trick.

A Swimming Cap. Although you will get one when you enter the race it is good to have another one. The main reason for this is that, if you put a cap on, then goggles and then your racing cap, it will prevent your goggles from coming off.

Comfortable Running Shoes: Make sure that you have the correct size and that you have worn them many times before.  If not, you can end up with blisters which are not very nice at all. I will cover how to avoid blisters in another article. Also, make sure they have support for your feet. The last thing you want is to have runners that will cause injury. Some people might suggest getting "racing shoes". The same principle applies to runners as it does with bikes…just use your regular runners. Then when you become more serious, it will be a natural progression to get racing shoes. You do not want to have so many new things to race with when it is your first time, or even if you are new to Triathlon and are a beginner.
So go out there, get off your duff and get active.

I just moved from Florida to northern Oregon and have never needed a wetsuit before so how thick dose it need to be and were is a goog place to buy one for cheap?

I'm sailing in April, May and July and I'm planning on getting a wetsuit. Should I get a shortie and then wear a fleece, windbreaker or rashie OR should I a full suit?

I am planning a trip to huntington beach soon to go bodyboarding. The water is likely to be between 66-70 degrees. What will I need to wear? Just a wetsuit top? A wetsuit top with neoprene undershorts? Springsuit? Full wetsuit? If I wear a wetsuit will I also need a rashguard? I would just like some help on what gear I should be wearing in that type of atmosphere. Thanks.
