So, you're on holiday in Cornwall, you've got a week or maybe two if you're lucky, the sun's shining, the sea's turquoise, and the surf's up. There's two types of people out on the water: the cool dude, who stands easily, riding the wave to shore, and the guy with his wetsuit zipped up the wrong way, who spends his time trying to stay afloat whilst swallowing a bucketful of seawater. Which one do you want to be?

If you want to be the "cool dude" or dudette, then you will be wise to sign up for some lessons. You will also learn how to put your wetsuit on the right way, avoiding the first cardinal sin of surfing!

Taking surf lessons in Cornwall with one of the renowned surf schools such as Waves Surf School (see bottom of this article for links) will get you standing up and riding a wave within your first two hour lesson. And yes, that's true for everyone, for all ages and abilities, from Gran to Uncle Albert. What can you expect from a surf lesson? Well firstly, your instructor will probably be good looking, which some might say is the best perk of all! Seriously though, here are the perks:

* Firstly, you'll get the best wetsuit around, in a size that fits, and one that will keep you warm.

* Equipment: your surfboard will be big enough to keep you safe, but soft enough to make sure that you don't get hurt.

* You'll have the best two hours of your holiday, and are sure to go home with the surfing bug!

* You'll be standing and riding a wave within two hours. Some beginners take to it like a duck to water and, with the right instruction, open up their lives to a whole new hobbie.

Surfing can be fun for all the family and is suitable for all ages and abilities, especially if you have surf lessons where you will be provided with a big, soft board. Waves Surf School of Cornwall say that their youngest learner has been six, with their eldest being a 65 year old Grandad.

The one criteria of going out into the seas to learn to surf, is being able to swim. It is recommended that you can swim 50m before taking surf lessons. Remember, surfing is an excellent form of exercise and is great for keeping fit. You don't see many overweight surfers paddling out to sea on their surfboards!

Cornwall is the perfect place to learn to surf, with gentle waves for all the family. There is a whole coastline to be explored, with the surf beaches found mainly on the north coast from Porthcothan to Harlyn, and Padstow on the doorstep and Newquay just around the corner. And for those in the family that don't want to surf, there's plenty of other things to do in Cornwall, from exploring the golden beaches, to eating in many of the fine restaurants.

Surfing is the sport of riding a surfboard toward the shore on the crest of a wave. It's a different and adventurous kind of sports loved by the most of people. Surfing can be fragmented into several parts such as drop in position to catch the wave, the pop-up, and positioning on the wave. On the other hand, surfing is very dangerous for the people who are beginners, but today there are many people who provide special class for this amazing sport. Generally, surfing is a surf water sport.

There are many popular surfing destinations such as Hawaii, California, Florida, Australia, etc. have surf schools and camp to offer lessons. Surf camps for beginners are multi-day lessons focus on the fundamentals. Most of the surf lessons begin with pushing students into waves on long board. Long boards are considered as the ideal surfboard for learning. Fun boards are also popular shape for beginners as they combine the volume and stability of the long board with the manageable size of a smaller surfboard.

Also if you are new to surfing, then you will want to look good. Nowadays surfing has become a part of the people lifestyle. There are many different brands which provide stylish surf wears starting from different prices and styles according to the customer demand. Surfers come in all shapes, sizes and styles both for the men and women.

Also, surf wear also plays very significant role in surfing; it should be nice and comfortable in wearing. The sea rises only to mid 70 in temperature, in this one can easily get ill and cold; this is the reason why surf wear invented to keep you warm even in the high temperature. Wetsuits work by trapping a small layer of water close to your skin. This layer insulates against the cooling temperatures of the ocean currents, this is the advantage of these wetsuits.

Because of the popularity of the water sport, it makes sense that the wetsuits and other kinds of surf wear increased in popularity. Be it surfing, body boarding, or any other fun and adventurous activity in the ocean, people just want to enjoy the natural entities around them.

Do you want to learn how to surf? Don't have the time or money to take a one or two-week surfing vacation just to learn how to surf?

Surfing Is Simple

Surfing is an activity that provides a great physical workout and is simplistic by nature. No need for a man-made court or field, or to gather a group of friends to play with or against. All you need are some waves, a surfboard, in some cases a wetsuit, and most of all the desire to get out there and catch some waves.

What Surf Equipment Do You Need?

The surf equipment you will need will depend on whether you are learning to surf at a warm water or cold water beach. In warm waters the essential equipment consists of a surfboard with fins, a leash, some board shorts, and possibly some wax (this depends on whether your surfboard requires wax or not). If you will be learning in cold water you will require all of the above, plus a neoprene wetsuit.

The essential piece of equipment is obviously the surfboard, although for cold water the wetsuit is also a must. It is highly recommended that beginners learn on a soft surfboard, also known as a "softboard" or "soft top". While these types of boards don't have the same feel or response as a normal, fiberglass surfboard, there are two major advantages that softboards provide beginners:

Safety - as a beginner you are likely to either get hit by your own board or hit another surfer with your surfboard. This is part of the learning process, but you can avoid getting stitches or having an experienced surfer hassle you about the damage his surfboard just sustained by starting out on a softboard.

Save money on surfboard maintenance - fiberglass surfboards are quite delicate and can suffer significant damage while you learn proper surfboard care and management. If a fiberglass surfboard is damaged it will take on water and the board will become water-logged causing your surfboard to lose value. Repairing surfboards can be expensive, so get yourself a softboard for the learning process and save yourself some money in the long-run.

Other equipment which is good to have but not essential:
Rashguard (for sun protection)
Ear plugs
Sunscreen

Safety and Awareness

The only prerequisite for learning how to surf is knowing how to swim (you should be a strong swimmer and feel comfortable in the ocean; if you don't, it's a good idea to work on that first or take some formal surf lessons first so your safety is assured). However, it is important to become knowledgeable about basic ocean safety and about the beach where you are going to be learning. Take some time to find out which beaches in your area are best suited for beginners, if there are potential dangers or hazards (are there rocks or reef?, is the beach known for having strong rip currents?), find out if there are lifeguards on duty, and check the surf forecast.

The most important thing for staying safe when surfing is to always be aware of your surroundings. Get in the habit of observing before jumping right in, especially if you are unfamiliar with a beach or surf break.

Once you know what beach you will be surfing at, go there and check out the scene. Observe the waves, try to identify any potential hazards. Scope out an area that is less crowded where you can paddle out. When learning it is important to have some space between you and other surfers so:

You have a better chance of catching your own waves
You are not hindering other beginners, or in the way of experienced surfers
There is less risk of you getting hit by another beginner's board, or your board hitting another surfer

At some beaches it may be difficult to find your own space. If this is the case, consider surfing in the early mornings or late afternoons, as popular beginner beaches may be less crowded. Another option is to sneak in a surf session during the week when there's typically less people at the beach.

The Queensland Gold Coast is all about the beach, theme parks, holidays and fun and whether you choose to buy your surfwear and surf clothing before you travel or once you arrive one thing is certain – you will soon be dressed and a part of the surf scene.

Whether you are looking for something as simple as pair of men's or women's board shorts, a new surfboard, surfwear, surf clothing, hats, jackets, wetsuits or shoes, you are sure to find it either in one of the many excellent Gold Coast shops or over the internet. In fact there are some excellent online surf shops that stock all your favourite brands including Rusty, Billabong, O'Neill and Roxy just to name a few.

Surfing in Australia is an important part of the local culture and many people deliberately move to areas such as the Queensland Gold Coast so they can don the wetsuit and paddle their surf boards out through the break before looking for the perfect wave to carry them back to the shore.

Strangely enough it wasn't until the 1950's that surfing became seriously popular throughout the world. The popular music group the Beach Boys began to sing about their experiences, movies were made, books written and before long a definite beach and surf culture emerged along with a with variety of surfwear, surf products and surf clothing.

Today surf and surfing products are sold across the world, they are obvious in the coastal areas but also have a strong following in regional towns that are many hours from the nearest beach.

Certainly is would appear that there is no stopping the massive interest in surfing culture. From the early days of the Beach Boys it only took a few short years to propel surfwear from an almost unknown industry into the mainstream High Street shops. This transferred to the coastal locations were beaches were filled with surfers and where they couldn't surf, they would work in surfing fashions and dreamed of riding the waves.

Today, it doesn't matter where you travel you can find surfwear offered for sale and being sold all over the world. It goes well beyond the simple T-Shirts and swimmers to now include everything from bikinis to belts, sunglasses, socks, watches and underwear.

There are a large number of manufacturers that offer and ever increasing range of surfwear and surfing products. Some of the larger and more internationally famous brands include:

Billabong clothing which dates back to 1973 is one of the world most recognised brands. At the turn of the century Billabong expanded into the global markets and has since become a major player in the manufacture and distribution of surf related products from the Australia to the furthest corner on the planet.

Rip Curl was born on the south coast of Victoria, Australia in Torquay and operated out of a small garage manufacturing surfboards to meet the local demand. In 1970 they expanded into making wetsuits and the rest is history. Today Rip Curl makes and sells a wide range of surfing products and non surf branded products.

Roxy was launched in 1991 and is now considered the leading brand of active girls. Roxy is a brand that continues to grow and offers a broad range of products with everything from swimwear to pencil cases and body lotions.

The sea rises only to mid 70 in temperature, in this one can easily get ill and cold; this is the reason surf wear invented to keep you warm even in the high temperature. Wetsuits works by trapping a small layer of water close to your skin. This layer insulates against the cooling temperatures of the ocean currents, this is the advantage of these wetsuits.

All and all surf clothing come in all shapes, sizes, shapes, brands and styles both for men and women. It becomes more popular day by day makes sense that wetsuits and other forms of surf gear increased in popularity in recent years.
